Our Family Friendly Library workshops provide an ideal opportunity to remind local families what a brilliant resource your library is – by putting on events to engage their children.

So we have curated a range of highly tried and tested creative learning workshops that put a smile of the face of maths, literacy or science! We will advise you as to the best choices for different groups, work with you to create a timetable for your event – and supply free marketing materials.

Maths Programmes include: CSI Storyland, CSI: Michaela Maths, CSI: Bake Off and Family Maths.

Literacy Programmes include: Celebrations in Rhyme, Spotlight on Shakespeare and a Visit from Bookman.

Science Programmes include: Journeys in Space, Time for Science and The Connection.

Workshops Descriptors:

CSI Storyland - With the help of the elves, the Shoemaker’s fortunes have been restored – and all is well in Storyland. Until, that is, his precious last is stolen! Which of his neighbours could have taken it? After using storytelling techniques to introduce pupils to the crime and the suspects, we'll share with them a range of clues left at the scene. They'll then use their sorting and numeracy skills to reveal the identity of the miscreant!

CSI: Michaela Maths - If it hadn’t been for the quick thinking of one of her teammates, Michaela Maths, one of Britain’s most promising young athletes, would be dead – slain by an unseen hand! The police are baffled by the dastardly deed – and want the children’s help in solving it.

CSI: Bake Off - All is not well in the world of the Bake Off – one of the judges, Saul Pinewood, has had food poisoning – and he knows it wasn’t an accident! He’s narrowed the field down to six suspects – and hopes that pupils can use their understanding of fractions, percentages and measurements to help him take the final step.

Family Maths - A Family Maths workshop sees families working together in a safe and engaging environment, participating in an independent carousel exploring (a) how broad "maths" is ... and (b) how easy it can be to use almost any family activity as a springboard for a quick maths challenge. Not only that, but everyone will get the chance to experience a bit of maths magic”, too!

Celebrations in Rhyme - Emphasising the importance of “choice” in poetry writing, this active and engaging session works with themes of the children’s choices, exploring them through some drama-based input and culminates in writing and performing some collaborative and individual poems!

Spotlight on Shakespeare - Our Shakespeare workshops are highly experiential, offering pupils a uniquely “actor’s eye view” of aspects of a play (or plays) of your choice. Content is appropriate to age, of course – so while younger children might explore the magical properties of the island in The Tempest, older ones might bring to life some of the principal characters and landmark moments of Romeo and Juliet!

Visit from Bookman - Bryan Buckman is a mild-mannered librarian, Bryan Buckman – but with the children’s help, “feeding” him with books, stories and characters, he’ll transform himself into homemade superhero, Bookman! He still needs help to regain all his lost memories, though, leading participants through age-appropriate drama activities to explore stories associated with the contents of his book bag.

Journeys in Space - It's more than fifty years since the first humans walked on the moon – and Journeys into Space allows us to celebrate this extraordinary milestone, using a range of age-appropriate drama techniques to explore the wonders of the cosmos, bringing things right up to date by exploring scientists’ efforts to make space travel greener and cleaner!

Time for Science - Exploring the pivotal role that concepts of time play in scientific understanding, Time for Science places science, engineering and technology firmly in context by directly relating a whole range of science strands to our everyday lives and experiences.

The Connection - Exploring the lives, achievements and legacies of individuals whose inventions and discoveries have affected all our lives!
