We all know how much family support benefits children's learning. So, our Family Literacy workshops have been specifically developed to gain and cement that support by offering a fun and friendly environment in which parents/carers work alongside their children on activities designed to highlight the joys to be found in books and stories!

And, by tackling our Best Books Trail, they'll discover just how much they actually know about the wonderful characters that only exist in their pages! Carefully structured drama activities will support participants to further explore some of these and choral speaking reminds all involved of the playful pleasure in the spoken word.

Family Literacy workshops are available in a range of formats - but if you book one at the end of a day of workshops with pupils, we'll be happy to offer you a healthy discount!

Family Literacy at St Peter's Catholic Primary School

Here, Jo writes about her recent Family Literacy Workshop at St Peter's Catholic Primary School in Stockport...

On a second visit to St Peter’s in Stockport this week, I had the extra pleasure of delivering an after-school Family Literacy session. The event was part of the school’s Reading Week and one of the aims was to promote reading together at home. What better way to do this than to remind all the grown-ups present of the joys of stories? In typical As Creatives style, I achieved this through a series of carefully structured drama activities, though I had to be mindful that these should not intimidate any of our family members! A gentle lead in, through our ‘Literacy Trail’ ensured that all felt safe enough to join in with a huge game of Character Statues… and an hour later I was bowled over as every voice in the hall joined in a poetry recital! It was incredibly rewarding to have family members telling me, on their way out of the workshop, that they were looking forward to sharing with their children stories they had forgotten they knew! Sharing a love for - and a belief in the transformative power of – stories, is without doubt one of the greatest pleasures of my job!

"The students, particularly those who don't normally enjoy reading, found a new way to look at stories. They also loved the active trail which was part of the families session." St Peter's Catholic Primary School
